Comic-Con 09: Left 4 Dead 2 Features Stronger Narrative Than First Game

For all of the high-intensity action and zombie-fueled chaos that Valve’s Left 4 Dead provided, the one thing it didn’t offer was a deep story. Of course, when a developer like Valve skimps on the narrative, you know there has to be a good reason. That’s why it’s hardly surprising that Left 4 Dead 2 will feature a bit more story this time around, for as Valve’s Doug Lombardi explains, the first game was meant to be more of an introduction to the game’s design, control and mechanics, rather than a vehicle for a really deep story.

“Now that we feel that we have a good framework, or a good lexicon, for folks communicating about the game and the action, we can start layering in bits of story now, and having them comment more on things in the world, comment more about what they’re thinking…and that just gives the world a richer feel to it, rather than just a sort of zombie shooting gallery.”

There are a few great interactive storytellers out there, and Valve has surely secured a permanent seat at the top of that list, which is why I can’t to see how it’s able to fill out the game world, and overarching story, of the Left 4 Dead universe.

New Left4Dead 2 Campaign: Swamp Fever

Electronic Arts and Valve will be revealing all-new Left 4 Dead 2 content at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, including the new campaign “Swamp Fever,” darkly pictured above. Where and when can you play it?

The “where” is the EA Gaming Lounge Presented by Xbox 360 at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter Hotel. The “when” is 2-9 pm Thursday through Saturday, and 12-5 pm on Sunday, which means you’ll need to miss out on valuable Con time—but will more than likely be worth it.

New Update for Left4Dead Released!

Focusing on custom campaigns, the update will provide mod authors with non-beta mod tools, which will now include source files for all of Valve’s campaign maps, along with an example campaign add-on tutorial map.

The update will also allow content creators to use a new framework that will package their campaign content into a single .VPK file. These can then be installed by double clicking on them, or dropping them into Left 4 Dead’s new ‘addons’ folder.

Lastly the update will rework the game’s matchmaking system, providing support for these custom campaigns, while also making it easier to create a lobby.
