Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 to Support Pseudo LAN

Battle.net developer Greg Canessa says that Blizzard is actively working on a LAN-like solution to include for Battle.net play in StarCraft II.

“We are working on solutions with regard to things we can do to maintain connectivity to Battle.net in some way, but also provide a great quality connection between players,” said Canessa.

Blizzard recently announced that traditional LAN play would not be included in the game, with offline play only being allowed in the singleplayer campaign.

I asked Canessa whether the solution his team is working on might include a pseudo-LAN connection, where the game would only check in with Battle.net to authenticate before reverting to typical LAN behavior.

“Something like that,” he replied. “Maintaining a connection with Battle.net, I don’t know if it’s once or periodically, but then also having a peer-to-peer connection between players to facilitate a very low-ping, high-bandwidth connection.. those are the things that we’re working on.”

Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson also confirmed that Diablo III will treat LAN in the same way that StarCraft II does, meaning that while traditional offline LAN will not be included in that game, it should support any Battle.net solution developed for the RTS.

It’s Official! Starcraft 2 Delayed to 2010

Update: Blizzard says that Diablo 3 is unaffected by the delay

In the long battle between Blizzard’s standards and the calendar year, the calendar again came out the loser today with the announcement that the studio’s anticipated RTS sequel StarCraft II has been delayed into the first half of 2010.

Blizzard attributed the delay to needing additional time to produce the new version of Battle.net, its online gaming service. Though few details are available on the new portal, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick likened it to Xbox Live in its combination of gameplay and social networking features.

“Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game,” said Blizzard in a statement.

Added the company: “The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.”

The shift of StarCraft II does not come as a huge surprise, as some analysts were already predicting the sequel might slip into the next year. Blizzard had previously stated the StarCraft II beta could last from four to six months, meaning that even if the beta had begun in August, it would have left a very tight window for Blizzard to work in.

While affirming the game was planned for release by the end of 2009, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime said in May: “But as always, we won’t release it until it meets our standards and the expectations of our players.”

Well at least we now have  a definite date of it being released. But knowing Blizzard, they’ll just further delay it even more. At least they’ll have more time perfecting the game, taking out all the bugs and stuff.

Starcraft: First Contact

Found this while searching around for stuff about Starcraft. There’s a youtube video, just click on to read more.

At the end of the 25th century, in high orbit over the fringe planet Chau Sara, the first volatile human contact with alien life was made. The Zerg hive spores had infested the topsoil of the planet, even now turning the planet’s inhabitants to the will of the Zerg Overmind. High Templar Tassadar, Executor of the Koprulu Expeditionary Fleet, was ordered by the Protoss Conclave to burn the subtly-infested Terran worlds. Thinking that the humans could still be saved, Tassadar personally scouted the planet in his command ship, the Gantrithor, in order to confirm the extent of the infestation.
