Sony’s Motion Controller Updates

Sony may not have done another full-on demonstration of its Motion Controller at this week’s big Gamescom event, but it did at least put together a little video showing off some of its progress, and GameTrailers has now thankfully obtained the goods so everyone not there can have a peek. Of course, there’s not exactly a whole lot in the way of actual new details, but we do get a glimpse of plenty of new potential applications for the controller, including using it as a paint brush, a magic wand, a torch, a bat to smash a pinata, or even an all-in-one hairstyling tool. Head on past the break to check it out for yourself.

PSP Go now has Mini Games & Digital Comics

The PS3 Slim might be getting all the attention today, but the new PSP Minis bite-sized games and PSP Digital Comics service are actually potentially game-changers as well — so of course they get their own promo videos. Minis are 100MB or smaller games that will launch on the PlayStation Store the same day the PSP Go arrives, and while the launch lineup doesn’t have any standout must-haves, we think they’ll be quite popular. The real sleeper might be the Digital Comics service, though, which will launch with Marvel titles and eventually add more publishers — although pricing and other details haven’t been announced, we’ve got a feeling quite a few PSP owners will be into the idea of getting comics on the go. Innovative new ideas or clever reaction to games and ereaders on the iPhone? Hit the break, watch the videos, and sound off.

Final Fantasy XIV?!?!?!

Seems like Square Enix has been spouting out tons and tons of Final Fantasies all over the place. These guys have been banking on the Brand Name forever. It saved them from bankrupcy and all that but coming out with one after another over and over? I mean Final Fantasy XIII hasn’t even come out yet and they’re already releasing trailers to XIV? Okay, I’m a fan of the series but sheesh, I haven’t played an FF title since FF X2 and that wasn’t really a fun one because of the fact that it was all too girly for me.

Final Fantasy XIV

(ファイナルファンタジーXIV, Fainaru Fantajī Fōtīn ), also known as Final Fantasy XIV Online, is the fourteenth entry in the Final Fantasy series, due for release in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows. It will be released simultaneously in all regions. Like Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online game. The game takes place in a land called Eorzea.

The battle and job systems will be different than the one previously used in Final Fantasy XI, which utilized experience points, and that the character races and monsters will resemble those found in Final Fantasy XI to allow players to create avatars similar to ones created in Final Fantasy XI. Group play has been de-emphasized, and now solo and group play have been balanced. Weapon use will alter “character development”. Square Enix is looking for a way to allow users to transfer their game names to the new MMO. The developers say that, in addition to Final Fantasy XI, they have been influenced in the games creation by World of Warcraft, Age of Conan and Warhammer Online, but most of all by player feedback. Chocobos will also return, but in a different role from Final Fantasy XI where they were just steeds.

DIY: How to Upgrade Your PS3 Hard Drive

It doesn’t matter if you have the 20GB, 60GB, or even the new 80GB PlayStation 3–you can always use more storage space. All that available hard-disk space quickly disappears once you start downloading games, demos, and HD videos. Fortunately, Sony has designed the PS3 to allow console owners to perform their own hard-drive upgrades. You can go out and select your own hard drive instead of being forced to buy an official first-party hard-disk accessory. However, giving console owners that freedom means that aspiring upgraders will need to know how to select the right hard-drive upgrade and the proper installation technique.

The first step to replacing the hard disk is going to the store or visiting an online retailer to pick up a new hard disk. The PS3 is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. Both 5400- and 7200-RPM drives should work fine. The physical size of the hard disk is important because it has to fit the PS3′s 2.5-inch drive tray. As far as storage capacity goes, it doesn’t make sense to go through the trouble of upgrading unless you go big: We’re talkin’ 120GB, 160GB, or even 250GB.
