6 Core “Thuban” by AMD
AMD is planning to create a desktop implementation of its Opteron “Istanbul” monolithic six-core processor. Codenamed “Thuban” (named after a star in the Draco constellation, which means Dragon), the new processor will be based on the socket AM3 package for compatibility with existing and future desktop core logic. It features six cores, 9 MB of total cache (6 x 512 KB L2 + 6 MB L3). Thuban is aimed to make for AMD’s high-end desktop processor, as the company prepares to face competition from a near-complete lineup of processors based on the Nehalem/Westmere architectures from Intel. It is expected to be the posterboy for AMD’s “Leo” high-end consumer desktop platform that succeeds its current Dragon platform.
Some of the key components that make up AMD Leo platform are the upcoming AMD 890FX and 890GX chipset, companion SB800 series southbridge chips, and members of AMD’s Evergreen family of DirectX 11 compliant graphics processors. On the software front, AMD will give its Fusion and Overdrive utilities some big updates. The SB800 series southbridge chips will feature native support for SATA 6 Gb/s and USB 3.0; connectivity is further enhanced by integrated Broadcom MAC Ethernet interfaces. While the Leo platform is expected to launch almost simultaneously with the 8-series chipsets, the six-core Thuban processor on the other hand comes later. It is due only in Q3 2010. Thuban will have come out an year after its enterprise implementation in the form of Opteron “Istanbul”.

As we know, Intel is planning for launch of Clarkdale in Q1 next year, and many of you may be eager to learn about its performance - it’s Intel’s first 32nm processor after all.
The folks at our friend site IT168 has managed to grasp a Clarkdale 3.06GHz engineering sample, and given it a quick test. As you can see below, the CPU features 4MB L3 cache and support for Hyper-Threading technology.

Future Intel CPUs will be broadly named over the Core brand, with i3, i5 and i7 “modifiers” depending on performance and features.
Intel has spilled the beans on its future CPU naming, claiming to have acted in an effort to simplify things, but in effect, quite the opposite has happened for us home builders.
The Core 2 Duo and Quad brands will vanish and will be replaced modified progressively after Lynnfield arrives with Core i3, i5 and i7 monikers. That’s not to say Lynnfield equals Core i5 though.
Instead, Lynnfield will span Core i5 and Core i7 brands and the choice of brand will vary between features (like HyperThreading) and processor performance.
Intel spins its Core marketing modifier as:
“For example, upcoming processors such as Lynnfield (desktop) will carry the Intel Core brand, but will be available as either Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 depending upon the feature set and capability. Clarksfield (mobile) will have the Intel Core i7 name.”

Say hello to Core i9
Intel’s upcoming flagship client processor, codenamed Gulftown will get the higher Core i9 marker. This 6-core chip will have every performance enhancing feature in the book available, including a total thread count of 12, and a 50% increase in L3 cache over Bloomfield, at 12 MB. It will retain compatibility with the existing LGA-1366 socket, and X58 chipset, and will be available in Q1 2010.

Gulftown. I’m guessing this’ll be 6 Physical Cores and 2 Threads on each core. Good thing it’ll be compatible for the early adopters of the X58 chipset. Heh. I haven’t even moved on from LGA775 yet. I’m still on my good old trusty P45 and X38 motherboards. Darnit, I feel like I’m so left out now.
More info:
Some days ago Intel put an end to the rumors and officially introduced the Core i3 and Core i5 pattern. But now new rumors say that Intel’s 6-core CPU Gulftown will be traded under the name Core i9. The current Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors will be the Core i3 family.
Gulftown is said to go hit the retail markets by the name Core i9 and represents the upper end of the performance array. The 6-core CPU is said to get all the features of Bloomfield, HT for 12 cores and a 50 percent bigger level 2 cache – all in all 12 MiByte. The Gulftown or Core i9 are said to be compatible to the socket LGA 1366 and X58 motherboards and first models are expected in Q1 2010.
