So It’s been my first week of culinary school. It’s been eight years since I’ve even been in school. Sure I’ve attended seminars and short courses along the way but nothing like this. Back to a school environment where grooming and uniform is a big fuss. It’s to be expected to be in the kitchen to look prim and proper, part of the whole job. I just forgot how boring it could get! LOL.
It’s a small branch. I’m the first batch to even use the newly built second classroom. One kitchen, BUT! very well equipped! The kitchen was quite clean and orderly. I have yet to see the ingredients coz I haven’t been able to cook there yet. Excited to do so though. We’re only twenty one in the class. Ages range from 17 years old to 29 years of age. Guess who the 29 year old is? LOL. About a quarter of my classmates actually live pretty far, BATANGAS! And then there’s two who live in Cavite. And the rest of us live near by.
Only about half of the class has any sort of cooking experience. One or two of us are actually quite experienced already. As for myself, I’m just a hobby cook who just decided to wanna do it professionally.
As mentioned it’s been a week. We’ve covered around 50 pages worth of the book. My teachers are excellent! They’re very experienced and at the same time really know how to teach. Well it is to be expected. The art of cooking food is something that is to be passed on. So teaching should be second nature. The art of cooking is also actually the art of imitation. Perfecting age old techniques and doing the same thing over and over again. In order to be a great chef one has to learn to imitate first. Then innovate. Imitation is key. Creativity is only second. One cannot master the art if one has not done it at least a thousand times. Some of my classmates do not realize that it is muscle memory and not brain power that teaches you how to do things right in the kitchen. I know this well. And I hope to master it also.
I just hope that my parents let me take up the baking course as well. To complete the Grand Diploma course,of course. Currently I am only taking up the culinary course which does not include baking.
