Overlord II is a 2009 third-person action-adventure game and sequel to the 2007 video game Overlord, developed by Triumph Studios and published by Codemasters for the Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. All versions were released in North America on June 23, 2009, then later in Europe on June 26 and Australia on July 9, 2009, along side two spin-offs; Overlord: Dark Legend and Overlord: Minions for the Wii and the Nintendo DS respectively.

Like Overlord before it, Overlord II ‘s plot is written by Rhianna Pratchett and follows the events of the first Overlord, where players will take control of the previous Overlord’s son (known as the Overlad), implied during the ending of Overlord: Raising Hell who as an infant has been smuggled away to the frozen mountain lands of Nordberg from a Roman-inspired civilization known currently as the “Glorious Empire”, bent on eradicating or enslaving known magical creatures. Other races set to appear thus far include thieving Gnomes and environmental activist motivated Elves, this allowing other elements besides fantasy such as politics, environmental issues and similar real-world problems to be parodied within the game.

The gameplay of the first game (which consisted of controlling the Overlord who in turn sent his minions to do most of the work) has been retained for this sequel, but, it has been greatly expanded. The intelligence and destructiveness of the minions have been improved and the new AI is able to do more things than before, such as “riding mounts, using war machines and sailing warships”.  Controls and visuals have been improved to make the game more attractive to a broader audience. Each minion can be given a name and if a minion you are fond of dies, he can be resurrected at a Minion Graveyard. Unlike in its predecessor, the player does not have to choose one of two wives, instead he has to take care of three at the same time.

Been looking forward to this game since I’ve heard that they’re releasing a new one this month. It’s finally out now. Yay for me and other Overlord fans out there.

Will post benchmarks, reviews, and screenshots from the actual game itself when I’ve acquired the game.
