MAYBE the third time’s a charm.

Microsoft must certainly be hoping so, after announcing the third reincarnation of its search engine, now dubbed Bing, which goes live June 3.
By pumping $80 million to $100 million into a marketing campaign to boost its new brand, Microsoft is hoping to pull itself out of a distant third place in the search engine rankings.

Research company ComScore reports that Google accounted for 64.2 percent of all US Internet searches in April, while Yahoo had 20.4 percent. Microsoft accounted for only 8.2 percent.

MSN Search, launched in 1998, first used search results from Inktomi, a search engine that Yahoo eventually bought in 2002. Ironically, Microsoft began losing market share after it introduced a homegrown search engine in 2004, culminating in the launch of Live Search as the replacement of MSN Search in 2006. In January 2009, after failing to complete a hostile takeover of Yahoo, the company announced a new search tool codenamed Kumo that would eventually be launched as Bing (http://www.bing.com).

I was a bit of a fan of Live Search back in the day.  But honestly, as soon as Google and Yahoo came up, Live Search just turned insignificant. I was getting more accurate searches from Google and Yahoo. For a while when Google first came out I was a constant user of Yahoo. Then one day I tried Google, and I liked it. No clutter, just searches. Loading was really fast since it was just a search box and the logo. So whenever I really needed something quick, Google was the way to go.

Looks like this bing thing of Microsoft is following Google’s footsteps. I sure hope they don’t scrap Live search since it’se already established.

Yahoo and Microsoft was in bed for a good long while together. Microsoft was wooing Yahoo to be part of their ginormous conglomerate. Good thing Yahoo declined. I would hate for that to happen. I love Yahoo. Microsoft for me is just a necessity.

Haven’t really tried bing yet. But I sure as hell submitted my urls there. Woohoo. =D I should really check it if my sites got indexed there already. Good luck to bing, and most certainly good luck to me.
